Oxen from New Brunswick...see their headpieces?

It’s written in stone, I get the Friday of Common Ground Fair off…someone else must man the campground because I’ll be in Unity at 9:00 AM waiting for the gates to open.  This wonderful celebration is only 45 minutes from the campground, always around the Fall Solstice.  For me, the weeks of anticipation between Fiber College and the fair feels like waiting for Christmas when you’re 10 years old…only now I’m old enough to know better than to wish the days pass faster than they already fly…so it’s a guilty conflict I suffer for a solid 15 days.

There’s no other place in the world where you can indulge in so much ADD behavior without anyone blinking an eye.   This year I got advice from three wise shepherdesses and chose two beautiful gray island fleeces for my winter time playing, learned about dyeing with the indigo Steven is growing in the garden, attended a talk on advances in solar panels, and shared hot cider with friends I hadn’t seen since last winter…and that was just between 9 and 11 in the morning.

By the time the gates were closing and the volunteers were ushering me out,  I had learned about the best lavender to grow in our damp, zone 5 climate (Hidcote hands down), tasted acorn flour bread and wrote all of the steps for producing our own…if you’ve been here you know we have acres of majestic century old acorn trees in the park, ate a bowl of beanhole beans, curried chicken and apple pie…ran into more friends from across the state and learned how to harness and drive a goat.

…what did you learn on Friday?

Fresh Eyes in September

Fiber College has been the focus of the past weeks…and then it took a week to get rested enough to want to look at the computer…but I’m feeling great again so…

This morning Steve needed to be on Sears Island to monitor the clam flats at 6:00AM…(it was a really low tide this morning) and I tagged along for a bit of a hike.  We had 950 acres all to ourselves and we hiked with mugs of hot coffee…my idea of a perfect morning…

Does three make a herd? Our big purchase during Fiber College was a 6 month old cashmere goat…Brambles.

His temperament is sweet, he’ll provide me with cashmere to spin at the end of every winter and he fits right in. It’s funny to see how different he is from the other Angora goats…Brambles acts more like a goat, eating vines and leaves but shunning fruits and candy…Queen Lollipop is thrilled not to compete for her junk food ;)

One day Gary said that his metal shop would be having a slow time…I started babbling about artwork I’d like in our garden…he said how big…I said how big can I go…look what Gary made for me!  I’m so very happy!

I haven’t been ignoring you…all of my energy has been devoted to Fiber College…check out that blog to see what’s up…we have a wonderful time but it’s a bit like Christmas…tons of preparation and then it’s over before I’ve had time to savor it…so I’m trying to savor now ;)

The porpoise were this close

This Morning I got up to a beautiful view of the Penobscot Bay from my campsite. It was so calm I had to go kayaking before breakfast. As soon as I left the beach, only out about 500′ out were 3 to 4 porpoises going in and out of the water.

I continued toward Sears Island and watched 2 Tug Boats heading toward Mack Point.  All around me were seals poking there heads out of the water one at a time keeping an eye on me. Then I noticed the Osprey flying around

On the way back to Searsport Shores there were loons and cormorants all around me.

As I got near the beach I heard the noise of a porpoise breathing and saw them playing around out on the Bay.

It was a great morning to be out in the kayak in front of Searsport Shores.

A call came in the other night…the voice on the line was hesitant and started the conversation with “you’re going to think I’m a nut, but…” Now who can’t smile at that? She had a special request:

The happy couple (Lisa and Geoffrey) are honeymooning at your camping resort premium site by the ocean and  we would like to do something special for them to make them laugh.
The bride wants to win a site decorating contest. Can you go to their site and say that they won “the best site decorating award” for being the most romantic? Please let me know if you need a credit card for a prize to give to them.
After this is done please convey to them that the Kellam’s wish them the Happiest Honeymoon anyone has ever had.
Oh, now that’s a fun way to start the evening.  Pat was in the office and I promptly volunteered her to award the happy couple the most romantic present we have in the store…a hand-poured, locally made travel candle that smells like a dozen red roses.  Pat is a wordsmith (check out her blog posts from last year) and quickly wrote the appropriate speech:

The state of Maine,
The County of Waldo,
The town of Searsport,
and,
The Queen of Searsport Shores:
I hearby award you,
Lisa & Geoffrey Green
the “Best Site Decorating Award”
for being the most romantic couple
to ever visit Searsport Shores.

Dear Geoffrey and Lisa, we all wish you a beautiful life!
